Dive Site Location

Dive Site Location

• Limestone Pinnacle
• Garden of Hard & Soft Coral
• Tropicals, Clownfish, Lionfish
• Moderate to Strong Currents
• 10 to 20 Meters Visibility
• All levels of diver

This unique dive-site is a huge lime-stone pinnacle that soars 30 meters up from the ocean floor to sit 4 meters beneath the surface where it abruptly ends and drops back to a sandy bottom.

The barely submerged reef is a well-known shipping hazard (see King Cruiser Wreck) and is located less than a mile north of Shark Point. The Thai name for this site is Hin Jom which means underwater rock and although not as colorful as Shark Point, the site is famous for its vast fields of sea anemones that cling to every conceivable surface and swing and sway with the current.

The profusion of sea anemones and the nutrient-rich water are a magnet to a constant parade of reef fish seeking food and shelter. Enormous schools of tropicals, snappers, groupers and colorful clown fish, along with larger game-fish like tuna and barracuda as well as the occasional leopard shark can be seen here

Diving Koh Samui

We are already half way through August and despite a gloomy global economy, business is brisk and boats are full.

After 16 years in Samui it is great to see the entire island very alive and back to normal with, hotel managers, restaurant owners and Diving Koh Samui tour operators all positive, and bookings are all back to usual seasonal levels.

Here at Bophut Diving School, we are busy renovating Sao Samui 1 (our first boat which has given 10 good years of service) in order to cater for more diver numbers. Sao Samui 2 is out everyday with staff working overtime, keeping it clean and well maintained in order to provide a high level of safety, comfort and customer service.

Keeping it in the family

One of the greatest thrills of my life has been watching my grandson recently complete his BubbleMaker Course with Bophut Diving School.

This brilliant little kid’s name is Ananda just turning 8 years old, and to be with him diving, while watching my son teaching him is the ultimate for an old diver like me.

Kids of this age have no fear, and Ananda just loved the experience in Japanese Gardens Koh Tao. Conditions were great. He felt absolutely confident surrounded by people he trusted.

My only problem now is wants to be on the boat all the time, and forever is asking when is Granddad going to buy him his first piece of kit.

Coral bleaching at Chaweng’s Reef on Koh Samui

During speciality training dives which I conducted today at Chaweng Beach, I noticed coral bleaching seriously affecting the local reef. In my opinion up to 10% of the reef may be affected.

Part of the reason the coral around all of Thailand’s dive sites seems to be affected is the unusual high water temperature. Reports of coral bleaching are coming in from Koh Tao and Pattaya as well.
